Ghosts were "created", like gods, to explain the unknown. When people could not understand some phenomenon, they attributed it to the supernatural. Thing like plagues became "Punishments sent from God" and so people developed ritualistic activities to please these gods. They comforted people that after death one can be sent to a Paradise or to Hell, but with a catch- they need to be moral, law-abiding hoomans. Many people need this comfort, like a protection or an insurance from the unknown, to live a happy life. It helps increase morality, good behavior, etc.. (depends on what the values of the religion are I guess.)

As science and technology developed, and humans were able to accumulate more knowledge, these concepts became more foreign, and outlandish. Though Im pretty sure that supernatural beings dont exist, I guess belief in them might make people more moral, in-line and happier- it might give them a purpose to live.

I don't know if ghosts exist or not.Scientists have no proper evidence of their existence but there might be a power beyond science!

surely this all has always been leading up to

I believe in everything science can't prove.
